Cathodic Protection" is a technique to prevent corrosion of a metal surface by making that surface the cathode of an electrochemical cell. For example, a tank system can be cathodically protected through the application of either galvanic anodes or impressed current.
(g) "Cathodic protection tester" means a person who can demonstrate an understanding of the principles and measurements of all common types of cathodic protection systems as applied to buried or submerged metal piping and tank systems. At a minimum, such persons must have education and experience in soil resistivity, stray current, structure-to-soil potential, and component electrical isolation measurements of buried metal piping and tank systems. Such persons must also be certified, and then recertified every 3 years, as successfully completing in-class and field training from a corrosion expert.

Installation, Repairs and Decommissioning – ALPEC held our first voluntary certification program in 1995 in Montgomery. The class was a success with 30 students enrolled in ALPEC’s UST Installation, Repair & Decommissioning Certification Program. Since then ALPEC has held the course on maintaining and improving our program. We have actively pursued mandatory certification for those who install repair and remove tanks in the State of Alabama.
Education is a fundamental tool to proper installation, repair and removal of tanks. ALPEC has had seasoned contractors attend our classes and walk out with additional knowledge.
Owners take our course because they know they are financially responsible for their site. Having knowledge helps them in choosing a contractor. Owners also say that even if they are not interested in doing the work themselves having knowledge empowers them in the work process.
Office personal, like our classes because it helps them gain a better understanding and see the overall picture. Our course helps them with completing ADEM forms and saves money by catch costly inaccurate charges and/or helps them provide accurate billing.
